Art,

wonder in a book

Book illustration
The story of each book, manuscript or incunabula impresses as much as the illustrations made with care and mastery, starting with Codex Aureus, which superlatively synthesizes the calligraphic and artistic performances of the Carolingian Renaissance, and continuing with various styles of illustration, on floral or animal themes, Byzantine or grotesque figures. This is the story we tell in a virtual exhibition or by reinterpreting book illustrations made by contemporary illustrators, transposed into digital art and presented to the public at the National Library of Romania, in Bucharest, and at the Batthyaneum Library Branch, in Alba Iulia. In partnership with Grafill - the Norwegian Organization for Visual Communication, we will use digital technologies to reach an audience as diverse as possible, in a project funded by the RO-CULTURE Program.

National Library

of Romania

Through its functions and attributions the National Library of Romania Romania is one of the fundamental cultural institutions of the Romanian culture, having the role to treasure and promote, in multiple forms, the national cultural memory. In the last decade, the Library has diversified the ways of promoting and capitalizing on its heritage, carrying out activities for an increasingly heterogeneous category of users, in order to attract and retain, in addition to consumers of culture, a wide audience.
Thus, the institution contributes to the construction of a dynamic and well-educated society, opening paths to the knowledge of national and universal culture and spirituality; participates in the social, cultural and economic development of the country and ensures, both today and next generation free access to collections, for information, study and research.

Alba Iulia

The Batthyaneum Library in Alba Iulia was founded on July 31, 1798, on the initiative of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Transylvania Batthyány Ignác (1741-1798), establishing the cultural foundation of public interest created by him under the name of Institutum Batthyaniani in Alba Iulia. The treasury fund of the Batthyaneum Library is the private collection of Bishop Batthyány Ignác, consisting of prints and manuscripts dating from the ninth century. Subsequently, donations were the main form of enriching the library's funds, during the nineteenth century and in the first half of the twentieth century. More than 200 years after its establishment, the Batthyaneum Library preserves its collection of medieval and premodern books for future generations.
