Richly illustrated, the encyclopaedia aims to document in detail all branches of human knowledge, promoting the ideas of the Enlightenment. Under the coordination of Denis Diderot and, for a time, Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert, 28 volumes were published, between 1751 and 1775. In 1780 appeared a supplement of five volumes and two of index. The work contains information on the arts and industries of Western Europe from the mid-18th century. Among the many illustrators and engravers who sign the drawings are Benoît Louis Prevost, Louis-Jacques Goussier, François Franque, Jean Raymond Lucotte.
