[Maiestas Domini / Hristos în slavă]

din Evangelium Secundum S. Mattheum et S. Marcum (Evangheliarul de la Lorsch/Codex Aureus), anul 810

NLR, Batthyaneum Library, quota MS II 1.

Illuminated Carolingian manuscript on parchment. In the image, Maiestas Domini or "Christ in glory" is represented in the centre, in accordance with the Christian iconographic canon that combines the Roman tradition of imperial iconography, which depicts emperors standing, with their right hand raised, with the vision of St. John the Evangelist from the Apocalypse: the figure placed in the centre on a throne, in tetramorphic format. Specifically, the four Evangelists are represented in a symbolic manner (in the shape of a lion - St. Mark, calf - St. Luke, eagle - St. John, man - St. Matthew), and the images of eight angels and a variety of Byzantine geometric motifs frame Jesus by a concentric band. This, in turn, overlaps with other decorations, carefully painted, which mimics a model of the Carolingian era in terms of ornamentation of liturgical books, that of gilded, ivory or inlaid with precious stones covers. Also symbolically, the wealth of the Heavenly Jerusalem is represented.

Codex Aureus, evangheliar latin prezent fragmentar în colecția bibliotecii, este cel mai faimos și mai valoros manuscris medieval occidental anluminat din România.
